Slovakia supports Montenegro's EU and NATO bids

Slovakia supports Montenegro's EU and NATO bids, Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajcak confirmed at his meetings with Montenegro's President Filip Vujanovic and Parliamentary Chairman Ranko Krivokapic in the capital Podgorica on Monday (June 8), reports Slovak Times.
Lajcak noted that Montenegro, which became independent from Serbia in 2006, has a great chance to be included into the group of countries that will achieve visa liberalisation with the European Union.
Montenegro submitted its EU bid in December 2009, and the European Commission is currently preparing its evaluation.
"This will take 14-18 months ... it can't be speeded up and Montenegrins know it," said Lajcak, pointing out that it is the new European Commission (to be formed this autumn) that will carry on with the evaluation, a fact that may influence the length of the process.
According to Lajcak, Montenegro apprehends Slovakia as a friendly country, which is also related to the fact that Slovakia provides the Balkan country with development aid. Moreover, Lajcak himself was active as the EU's supervisor to the 2006 Montenegrin independence referendum.
"The bonds that were also created by my activities there three years ago place our relations in a special category," said Lajcak.
