Solana praises Montenegro for speedy progress on road towards EU

16.07.2009

The European Union's High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy, Javier Solana, on Wednesday praised Montenegro for what he said was impressive headway and its accelerated and dynamic progress on the road towards European institutions.

Solana on Wednesday visited Montenegro, the last stop during his two-day tour of western Balkan countries.

He held talks with Montenegrin Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic, Parliament Speaker Ranko Krivokapic and Foreign Minister Milan Rocen in the Adriatic resort of Kotor. The talks focused on foreign policy priorities, Montenegro's political and economic situation and its efforts to be granted the official status of an EU candidate country.

After the talks with the officials, Solana told the press the recommendation proposed by European Commission earlier in the day about liberalising the visa regimes for Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia was of fundamental significance for Montenegro as it proves that this country has made progress in the process of Euro-Atlantic integration.

Solana said Montenegro would soon receive a questionnaire which it is obliged to fill out so that it can be granted the status of an EU candidate country.

PM Djukanovic pledged a speedy completion of the questionnaire, adding that the country's admission to the bloc is a top foreign policy priority of the Montenegrin authorities within their efforts to enable enhanced living conditions for citizens.
